A decomposed body of a man, wrapped in brown tape and sealed inside a plastic bag, was discovered near the Hindon Canal in East Delhi’s Ghazipur area, the Delhi Police said on Sunday.

He added that the area was immediately cordoned off, and crime scene and forensic teams were deployed to collect evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

The body, believed to be several days old, was severely decomposed. It has been sent to the mortuary for preservation, pending identification and an autopsy.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the man may have been murdered elsewhere, and his body later dumped near the canal. “The postmortem report will reveal the exact cause of death,” the officer said.

Police are working to establish the identity of the deceased through coordination with local police stations, examination of missing persons reports, and review of nearby CCTV footage.

“CCTV cameras are being scanned, and local intelligence is being gathered by dedicated teams. Searches are also underway in surrounding areas for possible clues,” the officer added.

An FIR has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
