Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said that his government will implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state on the lines of Assam. However, he did not elaborate on any definite plans about the same.

Khattar made this announcement while addressing a gathering in Panchkula town near Chandigarh on the last day of the Maha Jan Sampark Abhiyan organised to inform the people about the works done by his government during its tenure.

He also said that the constitution of a Law Commission is also being considered in Haryana while a separate voluntary department would also be set up to avail the services of the intellectuals of society. The CM said that the social audit system would be implemented so that the audit of development works could be done by the intellectuals.

Speaking to the media, Khattar said he met dignitaries, including the Haryana State Human Rights Commission’s former Chairman, Justice (retd) HS Bhalla, former Indian Navy chief, Admiral Sunil Lanba (retd) and Lt Gen Baljit Singh Jaswal (retd).

He added that the state is working on a fast pace on a family identity card and its data would also be used for the NRC.

It is to be noted that the assembly elections for Haryana would be held soon and the poll schedule is likely to be announced in the next few days by the Election Commission (EC) after which the Model Code of Conduct would come in effect and the state government would not be allowed to make any such announcements.
