The first-ever torch relay for the 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad will be reaching the City Beautiful, Chandigarh on 23 June from Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.

The torch relay was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19 June. The main event will be held in Mahabalipuram from 28 July to 10 August.

Punjab Governor and Administrator of Union Territory Chandigarh, Banwarilal Purohit will flag off the torch relay from Rock Garden Chandigarh on 23 June in the presence of Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament. This torch will be taken from Rock Garden to Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Panjab University, and Sector 42 lake, an official spokesperson said.

The torch will be taken to 75 cities in a span of 40 days before arriving in Mahabalipuram near Chennai. In nearly 100 years of the history of the Chess Olympiad, it’s the first time that India will be hosting the event.
