Western Odisha emerges as industrial powerhouse with TPWODL

Tata Power Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the government of Odisha, is demonstrating how reliable electricity infrastructure can transform regional economies and strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem.

Over the past four years, TPWODL has delivered quality, uninterrupted power to more than 21 lakh consumers across nine districts, covering nearly 48,000 square kilometres. Its efforts have been especially significant for Western Odisha’s fast-emerging industrial sector, which relies on TPWODL to meet its expanding energy needs, claimed the power distribution company.

Today, TPWODL powers 6,045 industrial consumers, including nearly 1,000 large industries and more than 5,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The region’s industrial network now includes nearly 2000 units, collectively drawing a contracted demand of over 100 MW. Recent measurements indicate a peak demand of 88.9 MW, underscoring the rapid growth in industrial activity and highlighting the increasing need for reliable, high-capacity power infrastructure.

In the last 4 years, industrial consumption has witnessed 40% growth. To support this growth, TPWODL has invested significantly in modernising and expanding its distribution network. The company has laid a total of 138 circuit kilometres of 33 kV dedicated feeder lines—comprising 35.70 circuit km in Jharsuguda, 51.50 circuit km in the Sundargarh and Rajgangpur industrial zones, and 50.30 circuit km in and around Rourkela. In addition, another 52.42 circuit km is currently under construction, which will further enhance the reliability of power supply for industries.

Reliable electricity has become the backbone of industrial and entrepreneurial growth in the region. With stable supply, MSMEs, the lifeline of India’s employment and innovation ecosystem are scaling up operations, creating jobs, and contributing to the nation’s broader goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). From facilitating small enterprises to scale up operations, to attracting new investments and industries, TPWODL’s efforts are directly contributing to inclusive development across the region.

Western Odisha’s progress illustrates how public–private partnerships in power distribution can catalyse industrial development. As India accelerates its push to become a global manufacturing hub, TPWODL’s approach provides a replicable model for other industrial corridors across the country.
