‘Soil to Silk’: Centre of Excellence under construction at Silk Directorate in UP

With the aim of realising Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ‘Soil to Silk’ vision, the Silk Directorate, Uttar Pradesh, is constructing a Centre of Excellence at a cost of Rs 75 lakh within the Silk Directorate’s office premises. The initiative will not only provide economic strength to the silk industry but also boost the rural economy.

The work is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed by the end of this month. This unique initiative by the Silk Directorate will give global recognition to the state’s traditional silk products and also create new employment opportunities.

The construction of the Centre of Excellence at the Silk Directorate is progressing rapidly and will take Uttar Pradesh’s silk industry to new heights. The centre will vividly showcase the entire silk production process, from ‘soil to silk,’ depicting the journey from farmers to artisans. It will demonstrate how silkworms for mulberry and Tussar silk are reared on mulberry and Arjun trees, how silk is extracted from their cocoons to make yarn, and how the yarn is spun into silk on handlooms and power looms.

The centre will also sell the state’s finest silk products, which were previously exported abroad. Assistant Directors of the Silk Directorate (Resham Nideshalaya), Neerendra Kumar and Ashutosh, said here on Tuesday that “the centre will feature an attractive display of the state’s finest silk products, such as Varanasi sarees and Bhadohi brocades, Mirzapur Tussar silk products, and handloom textiles from other districts.”

A sales centre will also be established where tourists and buyers can directly purchase products from local artisans. A changing room is also being constructed and will be ready soon.

The centre will be equipped with modern technology, including interactive displays, workshops, and training facilities. Farmers will receive scientific information on everything from silkworm rearing to processing.

Uttar Pradesh is one of the leading states in silk production in India, but due to local challenges, lack of marketing, and insufficient awareness, artisans do not receive fair prices. These problems will be addressed through the Chief Minister’s Silk Development Scheme (Resham Vikas Yojana) and the Centre of Excellence.

Guided tours and workshops will also be organised for tourists, which will generate interest among young people in this sector. This initiative will not only create employment but will also play a significant role in preserving the state’s traditional industries and cultural heritage.
