Indian stock market

The stock market ended higher in another rangebound session on Thursday. Nifty finished above 25,000 for the first time since August 21.

At close, the Sensex ended with a gain of 124 points, or 0.15%, at 81,548.73, while the Nifty 50 settled at 25,005.50, up 32 points, or 0.13%.

The BSE Midcap index climbed by 0.14%, but the Smallcap index ended flat. The overall market capitalisation of firms listed on the BSE stood at Rs 457 lakh crore against Rs 456 lakh crore in the previous session.

Among the sectors, Nifty IT was down 0.50%, Auto down by 0.33%, and Consumer Durables was down 0.29% ending with losses. Oil & Gas up by 1.10%, Media up by 1.02%, and PSU Bank up by 0.74% registered healthy gains.

Nifty Bank and Financial Services indices rose 0.24% and 0.21%, respectively, while the Nifty Private Bank index ended 0.29% higher.

In the banking index, Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Canara Bank shares were the top gainers on the index, rising nearly 2% each.

UCO Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank (PSB), Bank of Maharashtra and Bank of India shares rose more than 1% each, while the Union Bank of India, Central Bank of India and State Bank of India (SBI) shares also rose nearly 1% each.

On Nifty, 24 stocks ended higher while the remaining 26 ended with losses.

Some of the top gainers of the index were shares of Adani Enterprises, up 2.90%, Shriram Finance, up 2.55%, and NTPC, up 1.80%.

The top losers were Bajaj Auto, down 1.35%, Infosys, down 1.33%, and Eicher Motors, down 1.14%.

Around 113 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 42 stocks touched 52-week lows.

Those on the highs included Fortis Healthcare Ltd, Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd, Indian Bank, Waaree Energies Ltd, and Zydus Wellness Ltd.

On the lows included notable mentions like United Breweries Ltd, Easy Trip Planners Ltd, Affordable Robotic & Automation Ltd, Naksh Precious Metals Ltd, and LGT Business Connextions Ltd.

Out of 4,281 stocks traded on the BSE, 2,100 advanced, while 2,016 declined. Some 165 stocks remained unchanged.
