Cabinet approves Rs 8,146-crore investment in Tato-II Hydro Electric Project

The Union Cabinet Tuesday approved an investment of Rs 8,146.21 crore for the construction of the 700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in the Shi Yomi District of Arunachal Pradesh, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwin Vaishnaw said.

The project, expected to be completed within 72 months, will generate 2,738.06 million units of energy and improve the power supply position in Arunachal Pradesh while contributing to the balancing of the national grid. It will be implemented through a joint venture between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

The project will provide several benefits, including, 12 per cent free power to the state and 1 per cent towards Local Area Development Fund (LADF), significant infrastructure improvement, including development of roads and bridges, socio-economic development of the region, direct and indirect employment opportunities for local suppliers and MSMEs, and construction of essential infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and marketplaces.

The Union government will provide Rs 458.79 crore as budgetary support for construction of roads, bridges, and associated transmission lines, and Rs 436.13 crore towards equity share of the state. The project will also have a dedicated fund of Rs 20 crore for infrastructure development in the district.
