The school grounds at G.D. Birla Centre for Education, Kolkata recently transformed into a vibrant fairground. Colourful decorations and lively music mingled with the cheerful chatter of children and created an atmosphere that felt nothing short of festive. The spring-themed school carnival brought together students, parents, teachers and alumni for a day that was as meaningful as it was entertaining.
Visitors were greeted with a wide array of attractions from the moment they stepped onto the campus. Game stalls buzzed with excitement as students tried their luck and tested their skills. Food counters served popular treats that quickly became crowd favourites. Accessories and apparel stalls added a touch of shopping delight, drawing enthusiastic buyers and adding to the carnival spirit.

Speaking to The Statesman, Principal C.A. Lucas emphasised the reason behind organising the carnival. “The carnival is all about fun and festivity. The whole idea is to provide an opportunity for the children and their family members to get together on the school campus and just celebrate or enjoy the occasion,” he said. He went on to add, “Normally, we have our annual carnival in winter, but due to some other commitments, we have kept it in spring this year. Since we are having it in a period of time where, in another three weeks, the term exams will start, it’s providing a platform for children to ‘de-stress’ before they can get into full-mode study.”
Lucas further highlighted that children are weighed down with academics most days and that this platform provides a space where students can be themselves and simply enjoy the occasion. One of the most popular attractions at the carnival was the disco zone, where students grooved to upbeat tracks. The fashion show provided a space to showcase confidence and creativity. This was followed by energetic dance performances on the ground that captivated the audience. A lively flash mob further electrified the environment and received thunderous applause.
However, the most crowded corner of the carnival was the live tattooing stall. The stall allowed students to sport colourful temporary tattoos on their hands and cheeks. The principal clarified that the stall was introduced this year and was inspired by the rising popularity of anime characters among the younger generation. Interestingly, the artists behind the designs were students themselves. “It serves a double purpose. Firstly, students are able to sport tattoos of the characters they love, and secondly, it allows the artist students to display their creativity.”
Beyond fun and festivity, the carnival carried a deeper purpose. The children from the orphanage Shaishab were invited to be a part of the carnival. This heartwarming move reflected the school’s emphasis on promoting empathy and inclusiveness among students. It served as a reminder that celebration becomes more meaningful when shared.
According to Principal Lucas, this is the third edition, and the carnival has grown bigger each year. The entire event was largely conceptualised and executed by the students. “It is a product of a lot of hard work put in by the students. The teachers were the guides, but the decoration in every stall was done by the students. The games came from their creative minds. It also gives them a sense of pride.”
He concluded by stating that such events instil necessary values among students, “The key skills that the students gain through this carnival are teamwork and coordination. It creates a scope for unique creativity and also promotes healthy competition.” As the day came to an end, the carnival stood as more than just a celebration; it became a testament to creativity, connection and community.
