The West Bengal government has appointed senior IAS officer Dr Krishna Gupta as the next State Election Commissioner. The West Bengal government has appointed senior IAS officer Dr Krishna Gupta as the next State Election Commissioner.
A notification issued by the Home and Hill Affairs Department on June 23 said Gupta, who is currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the Co-operation Department, will take over the constitutional post after retiring from service on June 30.

The appointment has been made under Article 243K(1) of the Constitution, read with the provisions of the West Bengal State Election Commission Act, 1994, the notification said.

The notification states that the Governor approved the appointment through an official order issued from Nabanna, the state secretariat in Howrah. The order was signed by Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Chief Secretary to the Government of West Bengal.
The State Election Commission is responsible for conducting elections to panchayats and urban local bodies across West Bengal. Dr Gupta will take over the constitutional post once he demits office as an IAS officer at the end of June.
