In a breather to motorists, the transport department has announced extension of the date of waiver on penalty amounts of vehicles. The vehicle owners have been given an extension of about one month for the waiver scheme that would now be available till 31 March.

The decision has been announced in a notification issued by the department dated 27 February. According to the notification, the relaxation has been extended till 31 March.

Notably, earlier in the last week of December, the department had declared a waiver scheme, in which the penalty accrued on taxes due up to 31 December, if availed within the period from 1 January 2024 to 29 February 2024, would be waived off completely. Also, the additional fees for not obtaining certificate of fitness in due time and penalty on delayed renewal or issuance of permit would be waived by 100 percent if paid between 1 January to 30 January 2024 and 80 percent for payment done between 31 January and 29 February 2024. The waiver schemes being offered so far, were only for payments made till 29 February. After the deadline, the additional taxes and penalty amounts were to be charged as per the normal charges.

Section of transport operators, however, was not very satisfied with the durability of the waiver scheme. Members of several private bus and minibus operators’ organizations last week wrote to the state transport department for increasing the period of availing the waiver facility.

As per today’s notification, no further additional fee is to be charged from vehicles that would have already deposited the amount for renewal of certificate of fitness within 30 January and whose physical inspection was also completed but certificate yet to be granted by the first cut-off stipulated date due to congestion in the system.
