In a significant step towards completion of the Metro network near the city airport, the Kolkata Metro Railway has completed the construction work of twin tunnels underneath an existing Christian Burial Ground near Biman Bandar Metro station.

It being a burial ground, the construction work of the tunnels spanning over a stretch of about 1.8 km, was quite a challenging task, according to sources in Kolkata Metro.

Overcoming the difficulties, the Metro has been able to complete the task in about three years.

Apart from this, the Kolkata Metro Railway has also completed the construction work of the underground metro tunnels under the very busy VIP Road and Airport Entry Road. The approach tunnel adjacent to the Automated Mail Processing Centre has also been completed.

In addition, restoration of pathway and fencing at gate number one of the airport to the departure terminal flyover, Meteorological Building and Biman Bandar Yard for seamless movement of passengers has been completed. The metro railway authorities have completed the landscaping and beautification works of approximately 1.5 lakh square feet over the approach tunnel in view of the G20 summit.

Notably, Biman Bandar station of the Noapara-Barasat Metro Project via Biman Bandar is going to be one of the important stations on this corridor. The Metro authorities are expecting a daily footfall of 1,00,000 at Biman Bandar station within two years of commencement of commercial services in this stretch. In the first phase, metro services are to run on this 6.25-km long stretch having four stations of which Biman Bandar station will be the only underground one in the first phase
