West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), calling it a ‘Tughlaqi Commission’ being run by a political party. While addressing a press conference in Howrah, Mamata further alleged that the poll body is targeting Bengal through Special Intensive Revision (SIR) out of bias.

Questioning EC’s conduct of elections in India, West Bengal CM said that the poll body is defying Supreme Court orders, targeting voters, and undermining democracy. She accused the EC of snatching away the democratic rights of voters, citing ‘logical discrepancy’. She claimed that the women functionary in the BJP IT cell deleted 58 lakh voters’ names in Bengal using AI, on instructions from the party.

During her address, the CM asserted that she would not surrender. She said, “I am ready to go to jail. I will expose ‘Tughlaq Commission’ for bulldozing the democratic rights of people.” She announced that Trinamool Congress (TMC) will launch a worldwide campaign against the EC for undermining democracy, if needed.

Mamata also said that the Bengal government will 100 per cent protect its officers if the poll body penalises them. She said her government will promote all its officers who will be demoted by the EC.

Earlier today, TMC also posted on X, levelling allegations against the BJP of weaponising institutions to interfere with and destabilise the regular functioning of the state government ahead of the elections.

The post stated that the government officers are being abruptly suspended, transferred, arbitrarily summoned and being diverted en masse into SIR-related duties. TMC alleded that the entire exercise is being executed in a rushed, opaque, and disruptive manner, with little regard for administrative continuity or public service delivery.
