An FIR has been registered against former Diamond Harbour police officer Mitun Kumar Dey following allegations of custodial torture levelled by a Trinamool Congress councillor, bringing renewed scrutiny on an officer who has previously figured in political controversies in South 24 Parganas district.

The case was lodged by Diamond Harbour Police on the basis of a complaint filed by Dr Tamal Kumar Haldar, a councillor of the Diamond Harbour Municipality. Haldar alleged that he was subjected to severe physical abuse when Dey was serving as the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Diamond Harbour.

According to the complaint, Haldar had gone to a police station to lodge a grievance when he was allegedly assaulted. He claimed that Dey stripped him, beat him and subjected him to electric shocks.

The complaint also alleged that a journalist who attempted to report on the incident was similarly tortured.

Sources in the Diamond Harbour Police District said investigators are expected to question Dey as part of the probe.

Custodial torture allegations under investigation

Dey served as SDPO of Diamond Harbour before being promoted as Additional Superintendent of Police in the district.

Ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, he was transferred by the Election Commission of India to the post of Superintendent of Railway Police in Kharagpur.

The latest FIR adds to earlier allegations that had surfaced against the former officer.

Former TMC MLA had also named Dey in police complaint

Last month, former Trinamool Congress MLA and ex-state minister Giasuddin Molla lodged a police complaint naming both Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Dey.

Molla, a three-time legislator from Magrahat (Paschim), accused Dey of taking punitive action against local party leaders and workers who were unwilling to accept what he described as Banerjee’s style of functioning within the party.

“A Trinamool Congress worker was severely beaten by Mitun Kumar Dey. He tortured the party workers physically and mentally inside the police station. As the then party legislator, I protested. But it did not work out. On the contrary, Mitun Kumar Dey scolded me and came running to beat me with his baton. I informed both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee about this. But there was no solution,” Molla had said.

Molla had further alleged that Abhishek Banerjee was aware of Dey’s actions and claimed that the officer acted on Banerjee’s instructions.
