The youth services & sports department has placed an order for 6.60 lakh rakhis from Kalna, bringing renewed enthusiasm to the local artisan community.
Rakhi is a sacred thread adorned with a decorative dial, traditionally tied on the wrist during Raksha Bandhan — a festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on 9 August.

“The department has commissioned the manufacture of rakhis using environmentally-friendly materials, and we have been instructed to deliver the consignment by 2 August,” said Tapan Modak, secretary of the Kalna Weavers & Artisans Society. According to artisans, eco-friendly rakhis are more expensive than conventional ones.
