Officers of Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate (ADPC) questioned Chaitali Tiwari, the leader of opposition in the Asansol Municipal Corporation, at her home today for about two hours in connection with the incident in which three people died in a stampede during a blanket distribution programme organised by Ms Tiwari in Asansol.

Leader of Opposition of state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari and former AMC mayor, Jitendra Tiwari, Ms Tiwari’s husband, were present at the start of the programme, held on 14 December, but after these leaders left, local people rushed to collect blankets and in a stampede two women and a child was killed and nine others were hurt.

The son of one of the victim has lodged an FIR against 11 persons, including Jitendra Tiwari and his wife Chaitali Tiwari. Six people have already been arrested and they have been sent to judicial custody. Chaitali Tiwari went to Calcutta High Court seeking protection.

Though the court granted her plea, it directed her to cooperate with the police investigation. Earlier, twice, ADPC officers had put notices at her house in Asansol seeking her presence for questioning in connection with the incident. “The court has directed us to cooperate in the investigations.

My wife is sick, still we have come back but seven police officers questioned her for about two hours and harassed her mentally,” alleged Mr Tiwari. Unable to fight the BJP politically in Asansol the ruling Trinamul Congress is resorting to dirty politics and has given political colours to an accident, said Mr Tiwari.

A TMC delegation that included three ministers had met the families of the victims and assured to provide them all support. Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also has said that he will visit Asansol soon and meet with the bereaved families.
