Providing a fresh breather for jailed Trinamul Congress leader Anubrata Mondal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday gave a commitment to Delhi High Court that it will not execute the production warrant issued by a court in Delhi while the matter is pending before the High Court.

The Rouse Avenue court in Delhi had on Monday issued a production warrant for Mr Mondal on a plea of the ED in connection with the West Bengal cattle smuggling money laundering case. Mr Mondal on Tuesday moved Delhi High Court challenging the lower court’s order. After taking note of the submissions made by Enforcement Directorate counsel, the Bench of Justice Jasmeet Singh on Wednesday adjourned the matter for 9 January 2023, effectively giving Mr Mondal 19 days’ fresh relief. Mr Mondal, the TMC’s Birbhum district president was earlier arrested by the CBI in connection with the same case on 11 July.

The controversial leader is currently in the custody of Dubrajpur Police Station and spent the past twenty four hours in a temporary lock-up. He was hurriedly taken to Dubrajpur Police Station from Asansol Special Correctional Home yesterday morning amidst tight security after Dubrajpur police arrested him in a fresh attempt-to-murder case lodged by a TMC leader. Yesterday, after production, a Dubrajpur Court has sent him to seven days’ police custody.

He had been lodged in the Asansol Special Correctional Home for more than 131 days since his arrest by the CBI from his house in Bolpur. This morning he had his break fast brought from outside. A few TMC leaders and supporters had also gathered outside the police station. Sources said that he has directed the district party leadership to start preparations for next year’s three tier panchayat elections. The Dubrajpur Police Station have installed CCTV cameras and a temporary lock up has been set up for Mr Mondal, in a room which was earlier used by the sub inspectors.
