In a bid to “save democracy”, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray today met chief minister Mamata Banerjee at state secretariat Nabanna and invited her to his party’s campaign to replace Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) by ballot papers in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.

After the meeting ,which lasted for around 45 minutes, Mr Thackeray said: “We are demanding return of ballot papers in the elections. This is an anti-EVM movement. It is not anti-Modi. But if being anti-EVM means being antiModi, we are okay with it.”

Mr Thackrey said that his party will launch a massive campaign against the use of EVMs in elections that will be attended by several Opposition leaders.

“I came to meet Mamataji for the sole reason of discussing the developments regarding EVMs and VVPATs. We will take out a morcha (campaign) in Maharashtra regarding this. Mamatajiis one of the senior leaders in the country,” he said adding that he has invited Miss Banerjee to attend a programme of their party that would be held on 21 August.

“She and her party has expressed their support towards our initiative and agreed to be with us in this battle against EMVs. She has been selflessly working to save democracy in the country,” he said.

Mr Thackrey said that EVM voting has been cancelled in several countries. “Why is it still being used in India? The future elections should be conducted on ballot papers instead of EVMs,” he added.
