TMC 2.0 is born, but will it find a place in the Sun?

The MP asked if the minister of labour and employment can answer whether the government has any data on unemployment rates in the country during the last five years; (b) if so, the details of rural and urban areas, gender, youth and state-wise and (c) whether there has been a significant rise in unemployment rate among women and youth, if so, the reasons.

In response to Abhishek Banerjee’s question in Parliament if the government has data on unemployment rates, the ministry replied: “As per the latest available Annual PLFS reports, the estimated Unemployment Rate (UR) on usual status for persons age 15 years and above was 4.8 per cent in 2019-20, 4.2 per cent in 2020-21, 4.1 per cent in 2021-22 and 3.2 per cent in 2022-23 and 2023-24 and for the youth of age 15-29 was 15 per cent in 2019-20, 12.9 per cent in 2020-21, 12.4 per cent in 2021-22, 10 per cent in 2022-23 and 10.2 per cent in 2023-24.
The reply has clearly spelled that one in 10 in India are unemployed.
The Union minister’s reply further detailed: “Employment generation coupled with improving employability (including for women and youth), is a priority of the Government. Accordingly, Government is implementing various employment generation schemes/programmes. These inter-alia include Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY), Rural Self Employment and Training Institutes (RSETIs), Deen Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY- NULM), PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi), Stand-up India Scheme, Start Up India, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), etc.”
