The police have registered a murder case after the neighbour of a 22-year-old woman found dead two days ago lodged a complaint at the Narkeldanga police station late last evening.

The woman, identified as Pushpa Kumari, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her residence on Shibtala Lane in the same police station area, where she stayed by herself, a senior police official said.

“We received information two days ago that the woman, daughter of Raj Narayan Shah and a resident of Shibtala Lane in Kolkata, had been declared brought dead at the emergency department of NRS Medical College and Hospital,” the official said. Doctors had apparently noticed marks on her throat.

“On visiting the hospital, it was learnt from the victim’s father that a neighbour, Komal Singh, had informed him her daughter was found lying unconscious on her bed and was unresponsive,” he said. She was subsequently taken to the hospital by her father and neighbours, where she was declared dead at around 3.15 pm, the police officer said.

The building where the body was found has been sealed, pending further investigations, he said. A post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday to ascertain the cause of death, he said. From preliminary reports, the woman seems to have died of strangulation. After the post-mortem, the body was taken to her residence, where family members and neighbours had gathered.

Later that evening, another neighbour, identified as Bijanti Devi and a resident of the same address, submitted a written complaint to the police, based on which the Narkeldanga police registered a murder case today under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police official added that investigations have been initiated. The possibility of a love affair gone awry has not been ruled out.
