Hundreds of students of a private training institute filed a complaint with the police, stating that they were cheated by the institute at the No-3 Government Colony within English Bazaar police station limits in Malda district.

The students said that they had enrolled themselves for training courses in the institutie, which promised job placements either in the government or the private sector. The students were in for a rude shock as they reached the institution this morning and found the institute locked.

“The institute was operating from a rented apartment in a multi-storey building in that area, and students, mainly from rural areas of Malda, had taken admission there as they were lured by the jobs that the institute guaranteed,” sources said.

According to them, the institute used to charge around Rs 20,000 each for the training it provided in areas like office management and computer operations. Complainants like Jasmira Khatun and Sarifa Khatun said that they were promised jobs as nurses in either government or private hospitals.

“They also promised to teach us computers, but from the very beginning, we were made to learn yoga and exercises, while no academic activities were held there,” they said.

According to the police, the authorities of the institute had already absconded and a search for them was on. Inspector in-charge of the English Bazaar police station, Shantanu Mitra, said they have started investigations into the matter.
