The Met department on Monday warned that heavy rain is likely to lash southern districts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, in the next two days owing to the formation of cyclonic circulation in the northeast Bay of Bengal.

The weatherman said the cyclonic circulation lying off the coast of Myanmar is likely to move towards the West Bengal coast, leading to rain at many places in south Bengal on Monday and at most places on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Kolkata is among the places likely to receive heavy rain. A by-election to the Bhawanipore assembly seat in south Kolkata, where chief minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting, is scheduled to be held on Thursday.

A downpour is likely to occur in all these districts, besides Bankura and Purulia, on Wednesday also, the weatherman said. The Met department warned that the downpour may cause a rise in the water level of rivers, waterlogging in low-lying areas in cities and towns and damage to standing crops.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea till 29 September owing to squally weather. The state had received heavy rainfall early last week leading to waterlogging in and around Kolkata.
