A wave of conversations and discussions followed at Krishnagar parliamentary area in Nadia following the expulsion of Trinam00l Congress leader Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha. The controversy surrounding Moitra’s expulsion continues to polarize opinions in Krishnagar.

The expulsion was a result of allegations surrounding the ‘cash-for-query’ controversy, where Moitra was accused of sharing her credentials and accepting gifts from a businessman to influence parliamentary proceedings.

The expulsion occurred after a contentious debate in the ethics committee’s report, leading to an opposition walkout and subsequent accusations of an unfair investigation. Trinam00l Congress leaders expressed their dissatisfaction, with minister of state Ujjal Biswas asserting that Moitra’s vocal stance against the BJP in Parliament was the reason behind her expulsion. He vowed to send her back to Parliament in the next election, anticipating public support against the BJP.

Rukbanur Rahman, Trinamool Congress Nadia north district chairman, condemned the move, stating, “This action was expected. They (BJP) have done it intentionally to silence her, but their efforts will not be fruitful because Krishnagar people will punish the BJP at a proper time.”

The news of Moitra’s expulsion left Trinamool Congress leaders in Krishnagar shocked, prompting discussions among the public, especially the youth, who were seen passionately debating the decision in various places.

On the other hand, BJP workers and leaders in Krishnagar were jubilant, asserting that the central government made the right decision. Saikat Sarkar, BJP’s Nadia north district vice-president, expressed happiness over Moitra’s expulsion, alleging that she never advocated for the development of Krishnagar but instead spoke in favour of a businessman. He called for an immediate election in the parliamentary area to elect a representative who would prioritize the concerns of Krishnagar residents.

Amid the conflicting opinions, a resident of Krishnagar, Jatin Biswas, expressed concern about the potential danger to democracy. He emphasized the need for a fair and transparent process, stating, “If Mahua is proven to have taken bribes for raising questions in the Lok Sabha, then she should be punished. But, if the whole process is framed to block her, then it will be very dangerous for democracy.”
