In what comes as a ray of hope for the displaced residents of the subsidence affected zone in Bowbazar, the implementing agency of the ongoing Metro project in the area, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited, has finalised the tender for reconstruction of the houses.
More good news for Kolkatans on the way! The stretch between New Garia and Ruby has got the mandatory safety nod from the commissioner of railway safety CRS). The stretch is expected to be open for commercial services this month.
The New-Garia and Airport has got increased allocation in the recently-announced Union Budget with 242 per cent enhancement. With availability of funds, the authorities are also putting efforts to open the 9.82 km stretch from Ruby to Salt Lake for commercial services in the month of October.
However, the commercial operations in this stretch are also to be run on ‘One train only system’ like that of JokaTaratala corridor.
As informed by the general manager of Kolkata Metro Railway, the corridor is to have an integrated ticketing system and commuters would be able to travel from Dakshineswar to Ruby in a single ticket.
“The date for inauguration is to come from the ministry of railways. About seven to 10 days would be required by us as the integrated fare structure is being examined at the board and that authorization also has to come. By 14 February, we will inform the board of the date. The frequency of trains and services would be like Joka-Taratala at present but in another one-and-a-half years or two years’ time, it would almost be like the East-West Metro with the commissioning of CBTC. As pointed out by the general manager, it takes some time for installation of CBTC as the rolling stock and the tracks also need to be upgraded with the technology,”he added.
The control room of the upcoming Metro corridor of New-Garia and Ruby is at Central Park in Salt Lake.
