On International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Twitter that the state government has developed an SMS based early warning system for alerting people in the state.

Miss Banerjee, tweeted: “Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. Our Govt in #Bangla has developed an SMS-based early warning system for alerting people #Bangla about impending natural calamities. Flood shelters and relief godowns have also been constructed at district, subdivision & block levels.”

The United Nation’s website mentions that the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was being observed since 1989 after a call by the United Nations General Assembly for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.
