Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar ordered the immediate removal of an Election Commission-appointed observer on Wednesday after expressing strong dissatisfaction over the officer’s lack of basic knowledge about his assigned constituency.

According to Commission sources, the observer, Anurag Yadav, who was in charge of the Cooch Behar South assembly constituency, failed to provide essential information regarding the number of polling booths in his jurisdiction.

The issue came to light during a review meeting conducted by the chief election commissioner with all general observers appointed for West Bengal’s 294 Assembly constituencies.

Sources present in the meeting said that Kumar questioned Yadav about his responsibilities and preparedness.

When the observer was unable to answer basic queries related to booth management, Kumar expressed serious concern over his ability to oversee the electoral process effectively.

He also raised questions about Yadav’s sense of responsibility and role as an observer.

Following the exchange, Kumar directed that Yadav be removed from his position with immediate effect.

The Election Commission had appointed 294 general observers, one for each Assembly constituency in West Bengal.

As per guidelines, all observers were required to reach their assigned constituencies by 18 March and begin their duties.

Observers were also instructed to make their contact details publicly available to ensure accessibility for candidates, political parties, and the general public.

Additionally, they were asked to keep a fixed time slot open daily to meet stakeholders.

The Commission has emphasised that observers play a crucial role in ensuring that elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.

The removal highlights the Commission’s strict stance on accountability and preparedness in the ongoing electoral process.
