BJP today claimed that an 85-year-old woman, a party worker’s mother, succumbed to her injuries following attack by Trinamul Congress supporters in Nimta area, last month.

On 27 February, Sobha Majumdar trying to save her son, Gopal, from assault allegedly by TMC-backed goons, suffered fatal injuries. She died today morning.

The news of her death fomented violent protests by BJP supporters who blocked MB road, hemmed in Nimta police station demanding immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

An FIR was registered based on their complaint. Narrating her ordeal, the woman had earlier said, “They hit me on my head and neck and punched me. They hit me on my face too. I’m scared; they asked me not to tell anyone about it. My whole body is in pain.”

The incident of yet another political violence in the poll-bound state triggered massive outrage among people and political leaders across the country.

BJP’s former state women wing president and MP Locket Chatterjee lashed out at the ruling party, railing at chief minister Mamata Banerjee, over the death of ‘Bengal’s daughter,’ and demanded stern punishment of the accused. She also condemned the ‘barbaric and hostile’ TMC which did not hesitate to attack an 85-year-old mother for political vendetta.

“Mamata should feel ashamed over such incident. Being a woman chief minister, she is so cruel and vindictive that she didn’t take action for the heinous incident. The accused have escaped arrest and court’s trial. It requires exemplary punishment to stop recur of such such crimes,” she said.

Union home minister Amit Shah express his condolences on Twitter. “Anguished over the demise of Bengal’s daughter Shova Majumdarji, who was brutally beaten by TMC goons. The pain & wounds of her family will haunt Mamata didi for long. Bengal will fight for a violence- free tomorrow, Bengal will fight for a safer state for our sisters & mothers,” Shah tweeted.

BJP chief JP Nadda also took to social media and said, “I wish peace to Nimta’s old mother Shobha Majumdar’s soul. She had to sacrifice her life for her son Gopal Majumdar being in BJP. BJP will always remember her sacrifice. She was Bengal’s ‘mother’ as well as its ‘daughter’. BJP will always fight for the safety of Bengal’s mothers and daughters.”

After hearing the news of Majumdar’s demise, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted today saying, “This daughter of Bengal… is dead. She was brutally assaulted by TMC cadres but Mamata Banerjee didn’t have a word of compassion for her. Who will heal the wounds of her family?” he asked. “TMC’s politics of violence has bruised Bengal’s soul,” he added.
