The West Bengal government is considering setting up a greenfield airport in Kalyani near Kolkata to ease passenger pressure on the state capital’s already existing Dum Dum airport, state Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta announced in his maiden budget speech on Monday.
The state government has also proposed new airports in Purulia, Balurghat and Malda.

Presenting the state Budget in the Assembly on Monday, Bengal’s Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta earmarked Rs 10 crore for the aviation sector to support airport infrastructure and related development works for the financial year 2026-27.
Dasgupta said the proposed Kalyani airport would require around 1,000 to 1,500 acres of land and is being planned to meet rising passenger demand in the Kolkata metropolitan region.
The government also plans to expand the existing airport at Cooch Behar.
In addition, the Bengal government will provide extra land for the expansion of the Indian Air Force bases at Hashimara and Kalaikunda. 25 acres of land would be allocated to Hasimara Air Force Station and 37 acres to Kalaikunda Air Force Station.
The proposed airports in Purulia, Balurghat and Malda are aimed at improving regional connectivity and supporting economic activity in different parts of the state.
