Baby swap: Govt hospital orders inquiry

A maternity patient of Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital alleged that the hospital staff handed her a baby girl a couple of hours after she delivered a male child yesterday there.

A written complaint was lodged with Berhampore Police, said Pratul Chandra Ghosh, husband of the patient Sima Ghosh from Jhitkapara of Gopegram area under Nabagram police station in Murshidabad district.

Sima said that she delivered a newborn in the morning on Friday at Matri-Ma, the maternity ward of MMCH at Berhampore. “Immediately after the child birth, a nursing staff, on duty brought information with a smiling face that Sima had delivered a baby boy. But Sima was in utter shock when she found that the newborn placed beside her was a female baby wrapped in a diaper,” the Ghosh family alleged.

Officials of Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital at Berhampore today admitted that a complaint of baby swap has been lodged with the hospital super and a medical board has been set up to inquire into the matter.

It might be a case of confusion caused by wrong information to the newborn’s mother because a baby swap racket has not been heard of at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, said a senior doctor of MMCH at Berhampore today. Even if it is a case of confusion, the probe panel will have to fix accountability to ensure that such wrongs do not recur, he added.
