The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) on Friday staged a protest in front of the Uttarpara police station, condemning the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl inside the abandoned Hindmotor factory premises.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s parents, the incident took place last Friday within the closed factory compound. The main accused, identified as Dipankar Adhikari, who allegedly introduced himself as a civic volunteer and is said to have close links with a ruling party youth leader, has been arrested by the police. He was produced before the Serampore court and remanded to three days’ judicial custody. Police said they are searching for two other persons who were allegedly present and involved at the time of the incident.

The Hooghly district committees of AIDSO, the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and the All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan (AIMSS) also submitted a deputation to the Uttarpara police station, strongly condemning the brutal assault on the minor schoolgirl in the abandoned industrial premises.

Addressing the deputation, the organisations said the incident was not an isolated crime but reflected the growing violence against women and children. They alleged that the lack of administrative oversight and security in long-abandoned and unprotected industrial areas was encouraging such criminal activities.

Among those present were Chaitali Singh, Hooghly district secretary of AIMSS; Shimul Barman, secretary of AIDYO; and Sukdev Biswas, district president of AIDSO.

Santosh Bhattacharya, district president of SUCI (Communist), condemned the incident in strong terms. He said the rising number of crimes against women was a matter of grave concern and added that school-going minor girls were increasingly becoming targets of anti-social elements. He urged the administration to remain vigilant and take effective steps to prevent such offences.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Adhikari, organisational youth leader of the Trinamul Congress (TMC) in the Hooghly-Serampore area, said the main accused was neither a member nor a worker of her party. She added that attempts to malign the ruling party after committing crimes were unacceptable, and stressed that no one was above the law and that due legal process would take its course.
