Assam floods: Death toll rises to 47; over 7.2 lakh affected across 11 districts

Floods continued to batter large parts of Assam on Friday, affecting more than 7.21 lakh people across 11 districts, while the death toll in the current wave of flooding rose to 47.

The affected districts are Charaideo, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Kamrup, Golaghat, Hojai, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro), and Tinsukia.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), flooding has impacted 37 revenue circles and 883 villages. Around 25,375 hectares of cropland remain submerged, resulting in widespread agricultural losses.

Sivasagar is the worst-affected district, with 3,75,682 people impacted. Charaideo follows with 1,86,351 affected people, while Jorhat has reported 1,15,764 people affected.

Apart from rural areas, urban flooding has also affected Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan and Dibrugarh districts.

Five revenue circles and 17 localities or wards have been inundated, affecting 592 people. Authorities said waterlogging has disrupted normal life in several low-lying areas.

Relief and rescue operations remain underway across the affected districts.

Officials said 103 relief camps and 255 relief distribution centres are operational. More than 24,000 people are currently staying in relief camps, while over 2.39 lakh people have received relief assistance.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army, Fire and Emergency Services, district administrations and local volunteers are continuing rescue operations in the worst-hit districts.

A total of 4,455 people have been evacuated by boats during the ongoing operations.

Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission said several rivers, including the Burhidihing, Disang, Dikhow, Dhansiri (South) and Kushiyara, are flowing above the danger level, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
