India captain Rohit Sharma’s ODI future has come under fresh scrutiny after a report claimed the ongoing three-match series against England could be his last in the format.
The BCCI’s senior selection committee has informed Rohit Sharma that he is no longer part of India’s long-term ODI plans beyond the England tour, with the focus now on preparing a squad for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, according to The Indian Express.

The report states that the selectors, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided it is time to look ahead and give younger players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, an extended run in the 50-over format. With Jaiswal waiting in the wings, the management reportedly believes now is the right time to transition.
A source quoted by The Indian Express said the selectors had informed Rohit that they were “moving on” after the England series, while leaving the final decision on his future to the veteran opener.
The speculation has only intensified following Rohit’s modest returns in the first two ODIs. After scoring 11 in the opener at Edgbaston, the 39-year-old managed 26 off 47 balls in Cardiff before being dismissed. Across his last eight ODI innings, he has scored 241 runs at an average of 30.1, registering just one half-century.
The report also claimed Rohit wanted to continue in the format, particularly after working on his fitness, but was left disappointed following discussions with BCCI officials during the tour.
The third ODI at Lord’s on July 19 could potentially be Rohit’s final appearance in Indian colours in the 50-over format.
