This is not the first time BMW was forced to recall its luxury vehicles due to mechanical faults. The German automobile giant had recalled millions of cars on several ocassions due to a variety of resons.
Below are some of the largest vehicle recalls in BMW history:
Faulty Braking System (2024-25): BMW recalled over 1.5 million vehicles across the world over a faulty braking system supplied by Continental. The defective braking system posed a serious risk of power brake assist failure.
Exhaust System Coolant Leak (2018): The German luxury vehicle manufacturer recalled over 1.6 million diesel vehicles globally due to a coolant leak in the exhaust system.
Battery Cable Terminal Degradation (2018): BMW had recalled more than 310,000 vehicles in the UK and thousands more globally following a fatal stalling incident. The issue was caused by degrading battery cable connectors and fuse box terminals that caused cars to suddenly lose electrical power while driving.
Takata Airbag Crisis (2013-2017): Millions of BMW cars were recalled globally during this period over defective Takata airbag inflators. Takata reportedly used a chemical that could cause an explosion in the cabin.
