Amid chaotic scenes over a procession organised by the Kalighat faction of Trinamool Congress, party chief Mamata Banerjee was seen slapping a man outside her residence in the heat of the moment, triggering a massive political row.
The procession from Ballygunge to Harish Chatterjee Street, held on Wednesday with the court’s permission, witnessed scenes of unrest. The TMC claimed that the disturbances were part of a “planned attack” by the BJP.

As the situation escalated near her residence, Banerjee stepped out to disperse the crowd. She was seen gesturing with both hands, asking people to move away.

However, with several people continuing to crowd the area and recording videos on their mobile phones, the commotion persisted.
During the altercation, Banerjee appeared to slap a man at the spur of the moment. The identity of the individual and his political affiliation, remain unclear till the time of filing this report.
The video of the incident has since gone viral, sparking sharp political reactions. Banerjee’s politcal opponents, including the ruling BJP, criticised her conduct, describing it as an “act of arrogance”.
BJP MP Raju Bista posted a video of the incident on his X handle and claimed that the former Chief Minister might have lost her cool and slapped her own party worker.
“A man was trying to control the crowd and make way for Mamata. But Mamata lost her cool and slapped her own party worker,” Darjeeling MP posted on X.
The Kalighat faction of the TMC, however, has not yet issued any official statement on the incident, at the time of filing this report.
