In continuation of the ongoing ‘egg attacks’ against opposition leaders in West Bengal after their drubbing in the assembly polls, CPI(M) leader Minakshi Mukherjee was allegedly targeted in a similar incident outside the Sitalkuchi Police Station in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district on Tuesday morning.

According to the CPI(M), eggs were hurled at Mukherjee’s vehicle as she was leaving the area after meeting the family of party worker Montu Miya, whose body was recovered a few days ago. The deceased’s family has alleged that he was murdered.

Following the alleged attack, Mukherjee recorded a video from inside her vehicle, demanding immediate police action against those responsible.

The CPI(M) claimed that the incident took place right in front of the Sitalkuchi Police Station and alleged that BJP workers and supporters were behind the attack.

The incident comes amid an ongoing political controversy over a series of ‘egg attacks’ against opposition leaders in West Bengal following the Assembly election results.

After an egg was allegedly thrown at Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, similar protests and attacks involving opposition leaders were reported from different parts of the state.

The issue has also reached the Calcutta High Court through a public interest litigation.

Advocate Danis Farooq, who filed the petition, alleged that opposition leaders had faced repeated attacks and political offices had been vandalised after the election results, arguing that such incidents were detrimental to the democratic environment.

The petition also highlighted the growing number of egg-throwing incidents as a matter of concern.

Mukherjee had earlier criticised the police over similar incidents, alleging that despite public attacks involving eggs, law enforcement had remained a silent spectator while filing FIRs against CPI (M) workers during political programmes.
