First authorised series on Ali’s life
‘The Greatest’ holds a special distinction. It is the first scripted television series about Muhammad Ali made in full cooperation with his estate. Lonnie Ali, the boxing legend’s widow, serves as an executive producer on the project, giving the creative team what the show describes as unprecedented access to his story.
The series is described as an intimate exploration of Ali’s life. It goes beyond his victories and defeats inside the ring, aiming to show him as a man, a husband, a father, a brother and a son.
Jaalen Best plays Cassius Clay as he transforms into Muhammad Ali. The eight episode series will follow defining moments across his boxing career and his humanitarian work outside the sport.
The cast behind the story
Alongside Best, the series features several key names. Omari Hardwick plays Ali’s father, Cassius Clay Senior. Dana Gourrier plays his mother. Kai Parham plays Ali’s brother, fellow boxer Rudy. Amin Joseph takes on the role of Sonny Liston. Michael Ealy appears in a recurring role as Malcolm X.
The show was filmed across Ontario, including locations in Toronto, Cobourg and Hamilton. Filming took place through 2025 at multiple sites, including the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority building.
What the teaser shows
The first teaser gives fans an early glimpse into the tone of the series. It opens with young Cassius Clay giving himself a pep talk in front of a mirror, while highlights from his career and moments with loved ones play in the background.
In the teaser, Best delivers a confident declaration in character, saying he is the fastest, the strongest, and cannot be beaten, adding that he is going to be the youngest heavyweight champion ever. The moment captures the fearless swagger that made Ali a household name even before he became champion.
Following a legacy already told on screen
Muhammad Ali’s life has been chronicled before on screen. The 2001 biographical film Ali, starring Will Smith, remains one of the most well known adaptations of his story.
Reactions to the new series have been mixed so far. Some fans are excited about a fresh take on Ali’s story, while others feel Will Smith’s performance set a bar that will be hard to top. Some viewers have also asked why another Ali project was made instead of a series centered on a different boxing figure, such as Joe Louis or Jack Johnson.
