Twenty six years is a long time in any career, longer still in an industry that moves as fast as Hindi cinema. Kareena Kapoor took a moment to pause and look back at exactly where her journey started.

June 30 marked 26 years since ‘Refugee’ hit theatres, and Kareena did not let the date pass quietly. She shared two stills from the film on her social media, both pulled straight from 2000, the year everything began for her on screen.

One picture showed her in an emotional embrace with co-star Abhishek Bachchan. The second was simpler, a close-up portrait of Kareena wrapped in a brown shawl. She did not write a long caption. Just a red heart emoji sat beneath both photos.

The film that started two careers at once

Refugee was not just Kareena’s debut. It was Abhishek Bachchan’s too, which makes the anniversary carry a bit of extra weight for Bollywood watchers. Directed by J.P. Dutta, the film released on June 30, 2000, and introduced both actors to audiences in the same breath.

The story was set against the India Pakistan border in the Great Rann of Kutch, a backdrop that gave the film its tension and its visual identity. Abhishek played a man known only as Refugee, someone who made a living helping people cross the border illegally. His life shifts entirely once he falls for Nazneen, played by Kareena, and their relationship gets pulled into the chaos of political conflict and the lingering scars of partition.

A film that found love, even without box office success

Refugee did not turn into a commercial hit when it released. That part of its story is well documented. But what it lacked in ticket sales, it made up for in lasting appreciation. Critics and audiences responded to its unusual setting, the performances from its two debutants, and a soundtrack that still gets played today.

Anu Malik composed the music, and songs like Panchhi Nadiyan Pawan Ke Jhonke, Aisa Lagta Hai, Mere Humsafar and Taal Pe Jab became the kind of tracks that outlived the film itself.

Kareena on the work front

She built one of the most consistent careers in Hindi cinema.

Her filmography includes Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Chameli, Jab We Met, Omkara, 3 Idiots, Bodyguard, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Udta Punjab, Veere Di Wedding, Good Newwz, Laal Singh Chaddha, Jaane Jaan, Crew and The Buckingham Murders. Few actresses from her debut year have managed to stay this relevant for this long.

Kareena is not slowing down either. She has an upcoming film titled Daayra, directed by Meghna Gulzar, currently in the works.
