Rajkumar Hirani has been directing films for over two decades. He has worked with some of the biggest names in Hindi cinema. But one habit from one particular actor stood out enough for him to bring it up in conversation.

“He used to record his shooting rehearsals on his phone every day and send me. I used to feel like I was working with a newcomer,” Hirani told IANS.

The remark came in the context of a broader question. IANS asked Hirani about the differences between older and younger actors, specifically the perception that older actors are more patient on set while younger actors are more impatient. How does he see those differences, and how does his habit of repeating takes fit into his directing style?
His answer did not agree with the premise.
Hirani pushed back on the idea that dedication is tied to age or generation. He said it comes down to the individual.
“I feel that this fight is not of old or new generation actors. It is an attitude of individuals. I have worked with Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Arshad Warsi. They are extremely dedicated to their work. I have worked with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. I find the same amount of dedication in them. So, it is a personal attitude of a person. But it is an individual thing. Someone’s attitude is like, I am tired. They keep cribbing on the set,” he said.
The last two sentences are the key ones. There are actors who show up fully and actors who do not. Hirani is not naming anyone in the second category, but he is making clear that both types exist across all generations.
Hirani also spoke about his experience working with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, both of whom he cited alongside Shah Rukh Khan as examples of dedicated actors.
“Ranbir used to come to do his make-up at 3 o’clock. Vicky used to sit and work with me. There is a tremendous amount of dedication that they also had. But there are other kinds of actors who limit themselves,” he said.
