Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay celebrated his 52nd birthday on June 22, 2026. Actor Keerthy Suresh, who has worked with him in two films, put into words what many felt about the day. She said this birthday feels different from all the ones before it.

For years, June 22 meant something specific for Tamil cinema fans. It was the day film announcements dropped. First looks, teasers, trailers, and new project reveals all became part of the Vijay birthday tradition. Fans would count down and wait for something from his camp.

Keerthy Suresh described it plainly. She wrote that for years, Vijay’s birthday meant waiting for a first look, a teaser, a trailer, or the announcement of a new film. She called it a ritual that everyone looked forward to.

That ritual did not repeat this year.

No new character, a new chapter instead.

For decades, Vijay’s birthdays were closely associated with film announcements, fan celebrations, and special releases. This year, the occasion arrived under very different circumstances, with the former actor now serving as the state’s Chief Minister.

Keerthy Suresh noted this shift directly. She wrote that for the first time in over a decade, there is no new character being introduced to the world. Instead, she said, people are witnessing something far more significant. Vijay is reintroducing himself, not as a hero on screen, but as a leader stepping into a new chapter of service and responsibility.

She signed off her message saying they are all there, rooting for him, and added a line in Tamil wishing a happy birthday to Thalapathy, who she said lives forever in their hearts.

How Vijay got here

Vijay, whose full name is Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, was born on June 22, 1974, in Madras, now Chennai. He began his career as a child artist and went on to become one of the most successful and influential stars of Tamil cinema.

He entered politics in 2024 by launching Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). His party emerged as the largest political force in the state after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. TVK allied with the Indian National Congress and other parties to secure a governing majority. Vijay contested and won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026.

Wishes from across the country

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended birthday wishes to Vijay on X, writing that he prayed for a long and healthy life for the Chief Minister. Modi noted that this year marks a historic milestone for Vijay, following his party’s success in its very first assembly election.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also extended his wishes and pledged support for defending the rights, dignity, and aspirations of the Tamil people.

Actor Vishal pointed out that this was a completely different birthday compared to all previous years. Actor Raghava Lawrence described it as extra special, saying he was happy to wish Vijay as the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Mammootty, Kamal Haasan, Dulquer Salmaan, and Nayanthara also shared messages on social media.

Fireworks and fans in Sivakasi

The birthday was celebrated with a grand fireworks display in Sivakasi, organised by TVK members. The event featured a one-hour non-stop show in Sivakasi, widely known as India’s fireworks capital. Hundreds of spectators gathered with their families to watch. Actor Jai and State Minister Keerthana were present at the event.
