Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Tuesday expressed optimism about the Congress and Samajwadi Party’s prospects in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, saying a united and committed alliance could significantly improve the opposition’s position in the state.
The former Union minister, however, cautioned against making early predictions about the electoral outcome. He said both parties still need to strengthen their grassroots presence and work on consolidating their partnership before the polls.

“It is premature to say who will win or lose because we have a lot of work to do on the ground and also in shaping the alliance,” he said.
Khurshid said the success of any alliance would depend on equal participation and commitment from both partners.
“If the alliance truly reflects participation from both sides and complete commitment, we have a very good chance to turn things around in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.
The Congress and Samajwadi Party have previously joined hands in Uttar Pradesh. The alliance contested the 2017 Assembly elections together but failed to prevent a BJP victory.
The two parties also fought the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as allies. In that election, the Samajwadi Party won 37 seats while the Congress secured six seats in the state.
