Japan etched their name into FIFA World Cup history on Sunday, producing the biggest victory of their World Cup journey with a commanding 4-0 win over Tunisia in a Group F clash at Estadio Monterrey.

The landmark result came in the 1000th match in FIFA World Cup history, nearly 96 years after the tournament’s first game was played in Montevideo, Uruguay. In doing so, Japan became the first Asian nation to score four goals in a FIFA World Cup match.

The victory extended the Samurai Blue’s unbeaten run at the World Cup to four matches, the longest such streak in the nation’s history. Japan moved to four points in Group F, level with leaders Netherlands but behind on goals scored.

For Tunisia, the defeat confirmed another disappointing campaign as they were eliminated in the group stage for a seventh consecutive World Cup appearance. Only Scotland, with eight previous appearances, have featured in more World Cups without progressing to the knockout stages.

Japan made a dream start when Daichi Kamada struck after just 3 minutes and 27 seconds, registering the fastest goal ever scored by a Japanese player at the FIFA World Cup, according to ESPN.

Ayase Ueda starred for Japan, becoming the first player from the country to score a brace and record three goal contributions in a single World Cup match. The striker’s clinical display spearheaded a dominant Japanese performance.

Kamada’s early opener came after a slick team move carved open the Tunisian defence. Ueda doubled Japan’s lead in the 31st minute with a composed finish into the bottom corner before Junya Ito added a third midway through the second half after breaking clear of the backline.

Ueda completed the rout late in the game with a looping header, sealing Japan’s first-ever four-goal performance at a FIFA World Cup and significantly boosting their chances of automatic qualification for the Round of 32.

The match was also a milestone for Tunisia, who played their 20th FIFA World Cup fixture. They became only the fourth African nation to reach that mark after Cameroon (26 matches), Morocco (25) and Nigeria (21).

Japan now require just a point from their final group-stage match against Sweden to secure progression, while Tunisia’s campaign ends with yet another group-stage exit.
