FIFA World Cup debutants Cape Verde delivered one of the tournament’s biggest shocks so far, holding reigning European champions Spain to a stunning 0-0 draw in Group H at Atlanta on Monday.

Ranked second in the world and widely expected to dominate, Spain threw everything at the Cape Verde defence but were unable to find a breakthrough. The result was built on a heroic defensive display and an inspired performance from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who emerged as the standout figure of the contest.

The 40-year-old shot-stopper produced seven saves to frustrate Spain’s star-studded attack and earn Player of the Match honours. Vozinha made a string of crucial interventions, including denying Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres, Aymeric Laporte, Mikel Merino and Marc Cucurella, as Cape Verde secured a memorable point in their first-ever World Cup match.

For Cape Verde, the achievement was all the more remarkable given they are the third-smallest nation by population to appear at a FIFA World Cup. Yet they matched Spain’s attacking quality with unwavering discipline and determination throughout the 90 minutes.

Spain finished the match with 27 attempts on goal but failed to score, equalling their highest number of shots in a World Cup match without finding the net — a record previously set in a goalless draw against Paraguay in 1998.

The European giants came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Torres struck the post from close range. Later, substitute Lamine Yamal was introduced in an attempt to spark the attack, but Spain continued to struggle against Cape Verde’s organised defensive structure.

Cape Verde also had opportunities of their own. Diney Borges forced Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon into action, while Shamrock Rovers defender Pico Lopes produced a vital block in the 88th minute to deny Oyarzabal what appeared to be a certain winner.

The draw extended Spain’s winless run at the FIFA World Cup to four matches, matching their longest streak without a victory in the competition between 1982 and 1986.

While Spain opened their campaign with a point, questions remain ahead of their next Group H fixture against Saudi Arabia on June 21. For Cape Verde, however, the result will go down as one of the greatest moments in the nation’s football history.
