New Regime, New Responsibilies

Fifteen years back when a new government was formed, the state had gone on a cleaning spree. Roads, hospitals and new systems were being put in place and I was happy that at last things are being dealt with. But very soon the enthusiasm subsided. And during the tenure of the last regime we saw the deterioration. I had contacted the corporation on this issue but no action was taken. The last regime wanted to make Kolkata look like London but they missed the bus.

Only half a structure of a replica of the Big Ben was constructed but the system could not be brought to the city. I have spent five years in England and my observation as a resident is: 1: Cleanliness is taught at home, school and it becomes a part of each personality 2: Civic sense is developed throughout and at every stage 3: Systems are in place. For instance, separate bins are given to residents to collect dry, wet and recyclable garbage and people are educated about this.

There are bins which are there on the pavements after every few yards. The BJP has now formed the government in Bengal and it is promising to keep the city clean. This is itself promising. In this direction, it is is important to educate the general public first. Bins should be provided for collection of garbage. Sweepers and garbage collectors also need to be trained.

People spitting on the roads or throwing garbage should be stopped and fines should be introduced for those who don’t cooperate (something which the BJP government is planning to do). My hopes are very high and I am expecting major changes in the city and state. An App has been launched and I am hopeful that it works. I would love to be a part of this drive. Teams should be formed who would visit every home to educate the people about the systems in place. Students too have a role to play in this cleanliness drive.
