‘Time will tell’: Prakash Chik Baraik keeps BJP suspense alive after Rajya Sabha exit
Baraik’s visit to BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s residence has sharpened political speculation, though he said his next move would be revealed later.
Mamata Banerjee built TMC over nearly 30 years. It took six days to lose three Rajya Sabha MPs. The full list of every leader who has walked out, been expelled, or switched sides.
The Breakaway Bunch
Prakash Chik Baraik became the third Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP to resign from the Upper House in under a week when he stepped down on June 11. His exit adds to what is already the worst internal crisis in the party’s nearly 30-year history. The collapse follows TMC’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, which ended Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year hold on the state and set off simultaneous rebellions in the legislature and in Parliament.
Here is every leader who has quit, been expelled, or formally broken ranks.

Dev’s resignation received acceptance at Rajya Sabha Chairman with effect from June 10, 2026. She joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after leaving the Congress and is the daughter of Assam Congress veteran Santosh Mohan Dev. She had earlier served as an MP from Silchar. After resigning, she met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at his residence, sparking speculation she may join the BJP. She cited “personal and political reasons” but gave no further details.
Ray was the first TMC MP to leave the party after the 2026 election result. He told reporters he was sidelined within the party for demanding custodial interrogation of the police commissioner and the principal of RG Kar College following the rape and murder case there. In his statement, Ray described the election result as a verdict against the “15-year anarchical rule” of the Mamata Banerjee-led party.
Sources reported on June 8 that Koel Mallick would also resign from the Rajya Sabha, which would have brought TMC’s Upper House strength down to 11. However, no formal confirmation or official notification of her resignation has been issued as of the latest reports. Mallick, a well-known Bengali actress and daughter of actor Ranjit Mallick, was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in April 2026.
These MPs have not formally resigned their Lok Sabha seats but have publicly broken with the TMC, quit party posts, or signed letters supporting the NDA. Reports indicate a mass revolt of approximately 20 of TMC’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs who have announced their alignment with the BJP-led NDA.
Ghosh Dastidar resigned from all organisational posts in the Trinamool Congress, days after stepping down as the party’s Barasat district president. She is the acknowledged leader of the rebel Lok Sabha faction. Ghosh was among the first senior leaders to publicly criticise the role of I-PAC, the consultancy linked to Abhishek Banerjee, in party affairs. She lost her post as the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha and filed a complaint against the MP who replaced her. She continues as the sitting MP from Barasat.
Ghosh initially defended Mamata Banerjee after the election defeat, publicly claiming the party did not face defeat due to voters but by vote rigging. In June 2026, she shifted her position and joined the rebel Lok Sabha faction, stating she saw “no future in TMC.”

The architect of the legislative revolt. Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha were expelled from the TMC for alleged anti-party activities after they claimed that signatures of several MLAs were used without consent on an internal party letter. The expulsion accelerated the split. 58 dissident TMC MLAs backed Ritabrata Banerjee as the leader of the legislature party and conveyed their decision to the West Bengal Assembly Speaker. He was recognised as Leader of the Opposition, replacing Sobhandev Chattopadhyay.

Sen resigned as TMC’s national spokesman on May 28, citing the previous state government’s handling of the RG Kar rape and murder case as his reason. He has not resigned his Rajya Sabha seat.
58 of TMC’s 80 MLAs defied the party to elect Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of the Opposition, forming a rival leadership structure. Nearly 20 TMC MPs, including Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, announced support for the BJP-led NDA and sought separate seating arrangements in Parliament. Sources say several MPs are also considering forming a separate group and aligning with the ruling NDA, similar to the AAP MPs who resigned and later joined the BJP. Three Rajya Sabha seats have already been vacated. The anti-defection law remains the key legal variable for what comes next.
