After battling a series of setbacks last year—including devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh that repeatedly disrupted vital road links to Ladakh, a prolonged agitation that turned violent and claimed four lives in police firing, and the adverse impact of the Pahalgam terror attack on travel sentiment—the Union Territory of Ladakh has staged a remarkable tourism revival this summer.

Defying concerns of a prolonged downturn, Ladakh recorded a nearly 44 per cent increase in tourist arrivals during the first five months of 2026, with more than 1.17 lakh visitors arriving in the region. The resurgence has been fuelled by a sharp rise in domestic tourism, aggressive destination marketing, improved connectivity, and a vibrant calendar of cultural, adventure and religious events.

According to official figures released by the UT administration, Ladakh welcomed 1,17,546 tourists between January and May 2026, compared with 81,827 visitors during the corresponding period in 2025, registering a year-on-year growth of 43.65 per cent.

The tourism boom was particularly evident in May 2026, which emerged as a landmark month for the Union Territory. Tourist arrivals surged by an impressive 121.20 per cent, reaching 72,834 visitors compared with 32,927 in May last year.

Sharing the figures on social media platform X, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena described the growth as historic and credited sustained efforts to position Ladakh as one of India’s premier tourism destinations.

Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra said the strong performance reflected Ladakh’s growing appeal among domestic and international travellers and highlighted the success of targeted tourism promotion initiatives.

“The strong 44 per cent growth in tourist arrivals reflects Ladakh’s rising appeal and the effectiveness of our focused tourism initiatives. We remain committed to promoting sustainable, inclusive and year-round tourism in the region,” Kundra said.

Domestic tourists continued to drive the growth, with arrivals increasing by nearly 46 per cent from 75,801 in 2025 to 1,10,585 in 2026. Foreign tourist arrivals also registered healthy growth of 15.5 per cent, rising from 6,026 to 6,961 visitors.

Among international travellers, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States emerged as the leading source markets. Traditional tourism hubs such as Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany and France also contributed significant visitor numbers. Growing interest was additionally reported from Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, Australia, Israel, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.

Tourism officials noted that Ladakh’s popularity has expanded dramatically over the past two years. Compared with 51,520 visitors recorded during January-May 2024, tourist arrivals during the same period in 2026 increased by nearly 128 per cent.

The administration attributed the impressive growth to an aggressive tourism promotion strategy that included participation in major travel exhibitions such as SATTE and OTM, enhanced digital outreach under the “Destination Ladakh” campaign, and collaborations with leading travel media platforms.

A significant boost also came from the Sacred Exposition of the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha held in May, which attracted thousands of devotees and tourists from India and abroad.

Officials said a series of tourism events, including the Apricot Blossom Festival and Astro Tourism Week, helped reinforce Ladakh’s image as a year-round destination rather than merely a seasonal attraction, contributing significantly to the region’s tourism revival.
