The Delhi Police have arrested a cook employed at the hotel linked to the Malviya Nagar fire tragedy after investigators concluded that his alleged negligence triggered the blaze that left 21 people dead, including several foreign nationals.

The arrest marks the latest development in the investigation into one of the deadliest fire incidents reported in the national capital in recent years. Police said the probe has also led to the detention of several other individuals, while investigators continue to examine possible lapses in safety and emergency preparedness at the establishment.

Investigation reveals serious safety violations

The investigation has also brought to light a series of alleged fire safety lapses at the building. Sources said the windows and glass panels had been completely sealed, leaving no route for smoke to escape as the fire spread through the premises.

Investigators further found that the basement entrance was locked from the inside. Rescue teams reportedly spent nearly 10 minutes forcing their way in before they could reach those trapped inside and begin evacuation efforts. However, investigators believe the building’s design and safety shortcomings may have worsened the impact of the fire.

Fifteen injured continue treatment

Meanwhile, 15 injured victims remain admitted to Max Hospital in Saket.

In a statement, the hospital said all patients on ventilator support are stable and showing signs of improvement. Nine other patients are undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit and hospital wards.

According to the hospital, the overall condition of all admitted patients remains stable.

Hotel owner among those arrested

Police had earlier arrested hotel owner Lovekesh Bajaj along with Sweety Sarkar and Pushpo Sarkar in connection with the case.

Bajaj, owner of Flourish Stays Hotel in Malviya Nagar, has been remanded to four days of police custody. Police said a chargesheet has been filed before the court against the accused persons following the completion of the investigation.

The investigation into the circumstances leading to the fire and the alleged safety violations is continuing.
