For too long, since the Education Act came into picture back in 1835, students of Bharat have been made to learn the country’s knowledge system, contribution to mathematics, life sciences, philosophy, and other subjects just as footnotes, reducing the Indian traditional education system to merely create job seekers and individuals who were dependent.
In an interview with The Statesman, Dr NP Singh, the Executive Chairman of the Bharatiya Shiksha Board (BSB), said the colonial impact affected the algorithm of the country’s people with the Western influence on indigenous education, thus creating generations of those who were just capable direction following workers.

He said that the functional distortions had been portrayed as the Bharatiya philosophies as part of a sinister design to just work for the erstwhile British rule and for turning people into nothing more than ideological slaves.
He explained that the core vision and mandate of having the BSB is simple, to make individuals global citizens and self reliant with their core Indian values intact, who can engage confidently with the modern world.
The BSB has been set up by the Government of India and Patanjali has been selected as the sponsor body for the functional purposes, Dr Singh said.
Giving an example, Dr Singh said big global firms have Indians as their CEOs but not their founders. He called it a direct impact of detaching the people with Bharat’s essence.
Throwing light on the past, he said that the shift that started 190 years ago has made generations forget their own instincts and qualities turning them into ultimate consumers of Western concepts. BSB is weaving the Indian ethos and values with modern education, which will result in positively transforming the coming generations into individuals proud of the country’s culture and systems that once enlightened the world.
On being asked whether BSB aligns with the NEP 2020, and is not working to contain Indians to their own country, Dr Singh said that the board is directly aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, and also the National Curriculum, by integrating the Indian Knowledge Systems with the modern scientific and 21st-century skills.
The BSB, he said, focuses on the core objectives of the policy with the emphasis on understanding the concept of the subject, joyful learner-oriented education along with assessment. He clarified that there is no such model to go against modern education and progress. The objective is to incorporate the ancient knowledge and wisdom of Bharat, the land of great saints and scholars, for the current and the future generations.
Dr Singh shared that the Institutions are gradually getting connected and the teachers, who have earlier been trained as per the previous education style, are now being equipped with the ability to understand the essence of the BSB while the myths regarding the same are also being addressed.
He said that the BSB being recognized by the Ministry of Education its certificates have pan-India equivalence with the other state, national boards, granted by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Dr Singh emphasized that the board is legally on par with the CBSE and all other national and state boards.
He emphasized that the board is taking a step further from what the regular boards are doing in an effort to enrich the students and to ultimately create well-rounded individuals.
He shared that the pedagogical methods have been formalized after extensive research so that they make it work for modern students, with emphasis on experiential learning, rather than stereotypical learning patterns such as memorizing.
