India has shared the names of more than 2,680 people with the Bangladesh government for nationality verification, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday, May 29. He added that all illegal nationals staying in India would be “dealt with as per the law.”

“All illegal nationals who are staying in India will be dealt with as per the law. In the case of Bangladesh, as I had informed you earlier, we have referred 2,680 cases or more than 2,680 cases to the Bangladeshi side for them to verify the nationality of those people that we have handed over the names of. Once this nationality verification is done, we will be in a position to deport these nationals of Bangladesh,” he said while addressing a media briefing.

“…It is our expectation that we will receive an early response from Bangladesh on this particular issue, so that the bilateral arrangement that we have between both countries, based on that, these people who are staying here can be sent back to or deported back to Bangladesh,” he added.

On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said at a public function in Sonipur village in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar district that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was committed to identifying and expelling every illegal infiltrator from the country. He noted that infiltration from across the Bangladesh border had already started declining in West Bengal.

Shah even highlighted that the state government has taken swift action on border-related issues, which includes the setting up of detention centres and land transfers for border fencing work, IANS reported.

“Our government’s resolve is to identify and expel every infiltrator from the country… Earlier, under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, infiltration took place every day, but now infiltrators are themselves starting to return,” he said.

Further, the Union Home Minister said that West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and the BJP government in the state have built detention centres, but we all want those who entered illegally through infiltration to voluntarily return to where they came from.

“If they leave voluntarily, the Bengal government will not file any case against them and will even assist them in leaving,” Shah added.
