Jofra Archer delivered when it mattered the most as Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians by 30 runs in a high-pressure IPL 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, securing the final playoff spot with a clinical all-round performance.
Archer first smashed a crucial 32 off just 15 balls to power Rajasthan Royals past the 200-run mark before returning with the ball to claim 3/17 in a match-winning spell. The Royals posted 205/8 after recovering brilliantly from a shaky position of 119/5 and then restricted Mumbai Indians to 175/9 to knock the five-time champions out of contention.

The result confirmed Rajasthan Royals’ place in the playoffs with 16 points from 14 matches, where they will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.
Asked to bat first in a must-win encounter, Rajasthan Royals suffered early blows despite a brisk start from Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-hander struck 27 off 17 balls, including three sixes, before falling to Will Jacks. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and skipper Riyan Parag also departed cheaply as RR slipped to 54/3 at the end of the powerplay.
Dhruv Jurel attempted to steady the innings with a composed 38 off 26 balls, while Dasun Shanaka added momentum with a quickfire 29 off 15 deliveries. However, Mumbai Indians kept striking at regular intervals and reduced Rajasthan to 119/5 in the 13th over.
Just when Mumbai Indians looked set to restrict Rajasthan Royals to a manageable total, Jofra Archer turned the game around with a fearless counterattack for RR. The England pacer smashed one four and three sixes during his explosive 32 off 15 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja contributed an unbeaten 19 off 11 deliveries and Nandre Burger chipped in with 10 off three balls as Rajasthan collected 73 runs in the final five overs to finish at a commanding 205/8.
Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur picked up two wickets each for Mumbai Indians, but their bowlers struggled badly at the death.
In reply, Mumbai Indians endured a disastrous start after Archer struck in the very first over to dismiss Rohit Sharma for a duck. The RR pacer then removed Naman Dhir with a peach of a delivery as MI slumped to 13/2 early in the chase.
Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma also departed cheaply, leaving Mumbai reeling at 38/4 inside six overs. Suryakumar Yadav once again stood tall for MI with a fighting 60 off 42 balls, while Will Jacks played an aggressive hand of 33 from 18 deliveries to revive hopes with a 63-run partnership.
Hardik Pandya joined the counterattack with a brisk 34 and briefly threatened to swing the momentum in Mumbai’s favour. However, Archer returned at the crucial moment to dismiss the MI skipper, triggering another collapse.
Suryakumar’s dismissal in the 18th over effectively ended Mumbai’s hopes as Rajasthan Royals wrapped up a comprehensive victory. Alongside Archer, Nandre Burger, Brijesh Sharma and Yash Raj Punja picked up two wickets each in a disciplined bowling effort.
After the match, Hardik Pandya admitted Mumbai Indians conceded too many runs at the death and paid the price for losing early wickets during the chase.
“We gave away 10-15 too many. It was chaseable, but we lost too many early wickets. Conceding 73 runs in the last five overs cost us,” Pandya said.
The defeat capped off a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign for Mumbai Indians, who finished with just eight points from 14 matches and ended second from bottom in the standings.
Captains’ takes at the toss
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya said the decision to bowl first was influenced by how the pitch behaves as the game progresses in the afternoon.
“When we have played in the afternoon, it tends to get better in the afternoon. Looks like a good track. It’s hard. Will mostly play like this. Once the sun goes down, it’s slightly better. Just want to come out there and give our best shot. We have had a tough season,” Pandya said at the toss.
Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag acknowledged the pressure of the must-win situation but stressed the team’s intent to play with freedom and commitment.
“Would have done the same thing. Could be the last game of the season. We’ll play like it. All the prep and energy that went into the tournament… Hopefully, we maximise our opportunity and get ahead in the playoffs. Rather have this than depend on someone else,” Parag said.
