The Kerala Legislative Assembly is set for a historic three-way contest for the Speaker’s election on Friday, with the Congress-led UDF fielding Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, the opposition LDF nominating A.C. Moideen and the BJP presenting B.B. Gopakumar.
While the victory of senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is certain because the UDF has a comfortable majority in the House, other fronts are fielding candidates to clarify their political stance.

Former minister and senior CPM leader A.C. Moideen is the LDF candidate while the BJP has fielded B. B. Gopakumar, who won from the Chathannur constituency in the Kollam district, as its candidate for the Speaker post.
“For the first time in the history of Kerala politics, there will be a BJP candidate in the election to the post. Gopakumar will be the BJP candidate,” party’s state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar said.
The BJP secured three Assembly seats for the first time in Kerala’s history during the recently concluded May 2026 elections
