‘Never accept PM SHRI 3-language scheme’: MDMK’s Vaiko asks CM Vijay to reject ‘Hindi imposition’

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko launched a strong attack on the PM SHRI three-language scheme and appealed directly to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay not to permit its implementation in the state. The MDMK leader called the move a renewed attempt by the central government to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu. Invoking the emotional and political legacy of the anti-Hindi agitations, Vaiko warned that accepting the scheme would amount to betraying the sacrifices of those who fought and died opposing Hindi imposition in the state.

In a sharply worded statement, the MDMK leader urged the Tamil Nadu government to firmly reject the policy and asserted that “Tamil-conscious people” would stand behind Chief Minister Vijay if he opposed the scheme.

“If the government you have formed is to truly evolve into a people’s government, you must never accept the PM SHRI scheme,” Vaiko said.

Vaiko warned that approving the PM SHRI scheme would amount to dishonouring those who participated in the anti-Hindi protests and lost their lives during the agitation. “If this is accepted, it would amount to a blatant betrayal of those who shed blood and sacrificed their lives in resisting Hindi imposition,” he said.

He further added, “Tamil-conscious people will stand firmly as a protective force behind your government if you take such a decision.”

Vaiko revives anti-Hindi agitation legacy

Recalling the anti-Hindi movements of 1938 and 1965, Vaiko termed them as defining moments in Tamil Nadu’s political and linguistic history. He alleged that several Tamils sacrificed their lives while resisting attempts to impose Hindi.

“The anti-Hindi agitation that erupted in 1938 exploded into a language revolution in 1965,” Vaiko said while naming several individuals as martyrs of the movement.

He further alleged that hundreds of Tamils were targeted during the language protests and claimed the struggle permanently shaped Tamil Nadu’s political identity.

Invokes Perarignar Anna’s stand on two-language policy

Referring to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai, popularly known as Perarignar Anna, Vaiko said the anti-Hindi movement ultimately paved the way for Anna’s rise to power in 1967.

He recalled Anna’s strong endorsement of the two-language policy of Tamil and English and claimed successive governments in Tamil Nadu had continued to follow that position for decades.

According to Vaiko, the central government was now attempting to introduce Hindi in Tamil Nadu through the PM SHRI scheme under the three-language framework.

“All the governments formed thereafter have, to this day, adhered to what Arignar Anna prophetically declared. Now, the Narendra Modi government at the Centre is aggressively attempting to introduce the three-language policy and impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu through the PM SHRI scheme,” he alleged.

The MDMK General Secretary also welcomed remarks made by Tamil Nadu minister Rajmohan opposing the PM SHRI scheme and said the statement had reassured those fighting against the three-language policy.
